Burrow Out for Season with Torn Ligament

Cincinnati Bengals Quarterback Suffers Major Injury

Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow is out for the remainder of the 2023 season after suffering a torn ligament in his right knee, ESPN reported Monday.

The injury occurred during the Bengals' 27-12 loss to the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday. Burrow was sacked by Cowboys defensive end Tarell Basham in the third quarter and immediately went down in pain. He was helped off the field and did not return to the game.

An MRI on Monday confirmed that Burrow had torn the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his right knee. The ACL is a major ligament that helps to stabilize the knee joint. A torn ACL typically requires surgery and a lengthy rehabilitation process.

The Bengals have not yet announced a timetable for Burrow's return, but it is likely that he will miss the entire 2023 season. This is a major blow to the Bengals, who were hoping to make a run at the Super Bowl this year. Burrow was having a breakout season, leading the NFL in passing yards and touchdowns.

The Bengals will now turn to backup quarterback Brandon Allen to start in Burrow's absence. Allen has started just two games in his career, both of which came last season. He went 1-1 as a starter, but he threw for just 441 yards and one touchdown in those two games.

The Bengals are now 1-2 on the season and face a tough schedule in the coming weeks. They will play the New York Jets, Baltimore Ravens, and Pittsburgh Steelers in their next three games. With Burrow out for the season, the Bengals will need Allen to play well if they want to stay in contention for a playoff spot.
